Tobacco Inspections, Violations, and Sales to Minors, 2012-2020

Background: Tobacco is a known health risk, the leading cause of preventable death in the US, and a substantial burden on the health care system. For this reason, states regulate the sale of tobacco and provide resources to ensure compliance with tobacco sales laws. Additionally, the Alcoholic Beverages Division is responsible to ensure compliance with tobacco sales laws, such as selling to minors.
Map: The map to the right was designed to help the Alcoholic Beverages Division, communities, and public health agencies identify the locations of tobacco sales violations recorded by ABD compliance officers. Red diamonds identify violations involving the sale of tobacco to a minor, green squares identify all other violations, and grey dots identify the locations of compliance checks that did not result in a violation.
Interactivity: Click on the map layer feature in the top right corner of the map to see a list of map elements. The map allows users to view statewide tobacco violations by year. Check the squares to see violations for one or more years. Use the buttons on the top left of the map to zoom in or out. Click on any of the shapes on the map to learn more about the violation.
